Rohypnol is a drug in the benzodiazepam family, similar to valium but about 10 times more potent. This drug is used in other countries as a short term treatment for insomnia and as a preanesthetic medication but is illegal in the United States. Rohypnol’s use in the United States tends to be seen in the night club or rave scene by teens and young adults or as an aid to sexual assault. Rohypnol usually comes in a tablet form which can be dissolved in a drink or can be crushed and snorted. Effects of the drug usually last up to 8 hours.
The effects of Rohypnol include:
- Decreased Blood Pressure
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Confusion
- Visual Distortions
- Anterograde Amnesia
* Mixed with alcohol or other depressants, Rohypnol can be lethal.
The allure of Rohypnol seems to be as its use as a ‘Date Rape’ drug. Mixed with alcohol, Rohypnol can incapacitate a victim and prevent them from resisting a sexual assault. Even more appealing to predators is the amnesia caused by the drug. People under the effects of Rohypnol do not remember what happened to them often making prosecution difficult.
On somewhat of a positive note, it is reported that pharmaceutical companies are now adding a dye to Rohypnol that will be visible if the drug is slipped into a drink.
Sells for about $2 - $5 per dose
