Peyote is a small spineless cactus whose principal active ingredient is mescaline. Mescaline generally comes from the Peyote or San Pedro cactus. These substances known for their hallucinogenic effects have been used since ancient times. They are still used today for legal religious purposes as well as illegal recreational use.
Mescaline can also be produced synthetically. Synthetic mescaline is not very common however since it is not very cost effective to produce. Often drugs that are sold as synthetic mescaline turn out to be different drugs.
Peyote and mescaline can be taken in pills or capsules, smoked, or chewed. The effects are similar to other hallucinogen drugs such as LSD but much less potent. Effects generally begin in about half an hour of use and can last about 12 hours.
Effects of Peyote/Mescaline can include:
- Dilated Pupils
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Hallucinations
- Nausea
- Disorientation
- Vomiting
- Impaired concentration
- Tachycardia
- Impaired short-term memory
- Sensations of warm and cold
- Changes in perception & mood
Although Peyote and Mescaline are not generally considered addictive, tolerance does develop quickly. This can be risky since users may take more of the drug to achieve effects increasing the dangers and side effects. Often users must discontinue use for several days before the tolerance begins to disappear. Users frequently find that they develop cross-tolerance as well with other hallucinogens so that they will have developed tolerance to a similar drug that they have not even used.
