Maintenance & Testing of Backflow Prevention Devices

As of October 5, 2009, the Township of Ocean began enforcing N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.23(i), N.J.A.C. 5:23-3.15 and the code section 10.5.6 of the National Standard Plumbing Code entitled “Maintenance and Testing of Backflow Prevention Devices”. This code requires all testable backflow preventers to be tested on
initial installation and annually for commercial properties. For residential irrigation systems, this testing
is required only on the initial install itself.

In accordance with this code requirement, you would need to provide the building department a copy of your test results and the required permit needed to perform this inspection. Failure to provide the permit and test results may subject you to a violation notice.

We understand some facilities may not be aware if they have these devices installed. Please contact a local certified backflow device inspector to check your water supply. Please have them submit a document with the results of their findings. Please go to the following web site for a listing of all the certified testers in the
state of New Jersey.
